st james's recruit

Jean-Claude Messant, resident manager at London's Waldorf Hotel, has become general manager of the St James's Club, acquired by former Ladbroke boss Cyril Stein last month.

The 33-bedroom London club is to reopen on 18 April after a multi-million-pound revamp. Mr Messant told Caterer it would remain a members-only club, but with all facilities upgraded, a new fitness centre and the number of bedrooms increased from 33 to about 60.

Mr Messant is to give the 60 staff laid off after the closure the option of reapplying for their jobs.

Scottish forum

Gleneagles managing director Peter Lederer has been elected the first chairman of the Scottish Tourism Forum, which met for the first time last week.

The forum was established to represent views from all sectors of the industry and advise Scottish tourism minister Lord James Douglas Hamilton.

Bass Taverns has unveiled its latest food and drink concept, All Bar One, in Sutton, Surrey.

The new outlet is the first of a chain planned for city centres and high streets across the country. It offers wine, beer and food in a café environment.
