Industry split on smoking

The hospitality industry remains undecided on smoking bans in hotels, restaurants and pubs, according to polls conducted by Caterer.com.

Asked if smoking should be banned in restaurants, 53% of respondents said it should not, while 47% thought it should.

On whether smoking should be banned in hotels, the split was reversed, with 53% in favour and 47% against.

When it came to pubs and bars, the votes were split 50:50.

More than 600 users of the Web site took part in the survey.

Last week the Norwegian government said that it planned to enforce a total ban on smoking in hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés.

The law is not expected to come into force until 2004.
