Irish B&Bs in a slump

B&B operators in Ireland are closing because of a slump in business, according to one of their professional associations.

The 1,900-member Town & Country Homes Association said an overnight stay in Ireland cost an average IR£26 (£20) to provide, but with en suite accommodation costing an average IR£38 (£29), this left just IR£12 (£9) for the operator.

"We are fighting holiday homes and cheaper hotel rates. But hotels have more opportunities for profit from providing bar and other facilities," said Margaret Storey, the association's chief executive.

But Irish tourist board Bord F ilte is confident a 6% growth will be achieved in the year. "It's rubbish to say there's a slump," said a spokesman. "There was a softness in May and June, but overall the picture is positive."
