Marriott International reports record revenue for 2013

Marriott International recorded a 9.6% increase in income to $626m (£375m) during 2013.

Arne Sorenson, president and chief executive of Marriott International, said he welcomed the full year results for 2013, which he described as a "year of firsts".

"Strong revpar (revenue per available room) growth and new hotels drove Marriott's fee revenue to a record $1.5 billion (£90m)," he said. "We signed contracts with owners and franchisees for 67,000 new rooms, the most productive year in our history averaging more than one hotel every day. Our development pipeline reached a record 195,000 rooms."

Also good news for the group, which operates more than 3,700 hotels across 18 brands, was the signing of 3.4m new members to the Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton Rewards schemes, which has helped membership increase by nearly 50% over the past five years.

During 2013, a record 25% of room nights were booked on Marriott.com, while Marriott mobile reservations grew by 67%.
