Metcalfe swaps hotels at jarvis

John Metcalfe has been appointed general manager of the Georgian House Hotel in Bolton, Greater Manchester, which was acquired by Jarvis Hotels recently for about £4.8m.

Mr Metcalfe, previously general manager of the Jarvis Bankfield Hotel at Bingley, West Yorkshire, takes over a property with 102 bedrooms, four bars, eight meeting rooms and a leisure club.

Meinhold takes reins at Swissotel

Andreas Meinhold takes over from Pierre Martinet as president of the Swissôtel Group in mid-January, as part of a reorganisation of the company's management.

Mr Meinhold, most recently head of Swissôtel's North America region, will assume responsibility for all 16 hotels in the group. At the same time, the functions of marketing and business development will be moved to New York.

Porter to manage first cafe orchids

Nick Porter, formerly of the Balcony Café in Worcester, has been appointed manager of Café Orchids, which opened last week at Worcester's CrownGate shopping centre.

The café, which is operated by Caterleisure's Orchids division, will serve freshly prepared daily specials and offer table service. The company will employ about 30 staff at the venue, which is the group's first café-bar.

Caterer promotes editorial staff

Caterer & Hotelkeeper has made a number of internal promotions, with Bob Gledhill, northern editor for the past five years, stepping up to deputy editor.

Jenny Webster is promoted from deputy features editor to features editor, Linda Fox moves from editor's secretary to features writer and Jane Eccles switches from editorial secretary to editor's secretary.

There are also changes at Food Service Management (FSM), Caterer's bi-monthly magazine for the food service sector. David Goymour, acting deputy features editor on Caterer, has been promoted to editor of FSM. Bob Gledhill, who has edited the title since its launch in April, remains involved as managing editor.

Whitley steps up at Marche

Marc Whitley is shortly to take up the post of deputy general manager at the Marché Restaurant in London's Leicester Square, part of the Mövenpick group.

Mr Whitley is currently market manager at the same restaurant, reporting to general manager Derk Jolles. Before that he spent 18 years in the industry in the USA.

Marché Restaurants is continuing its expansion programme, following the opening of the Freshtaurant at London's Victoria in August. The next Marché opens at Legoland in Windsor, Berkshire, in March.

Harry ramsden's chief wins award

Russell Scott, 34, chief executive and group operations director of Harry Ramsden's, has won the management ability category of the 1995 Yorkshire Young Achiever Awards.

A former Caterer & Hotelkeeper Acorn Award winner, he won this accolade for his achievement in opening 12 new restaurants in the past five years.

HELEN McGLASHAN to conference manager, Manchester Conference Centre, from sales and training development manager. Sarah Evans is promoted to sales manager.

ANTHONY KINNEAR to general manager, Knickerbocker Hotel, Chicago, from regionalvice-president, Forte Hotels International.

ALAN McCOLGAN to head of corporate sales, Granada Studios Tour, from sales and marketing manager, Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel, Manchester.

MATTHEW COLLINS to senior consultant, Farlow & Warren Search & Selection, heading up a new chef and catering division, from senior consultant, Reed Catering.

SIR CHRISTOPHER HOGG to non-executive chairman, Allied Domecq, from non-executive deputy chairman.

MICHAEL O'HARE to associate director, BDO Hospitality Consulting, from managing consultant with the firm.

KEN and MARY-JO BANNISTER to managers of the Twigworth, a pub near Gloucester with a 52-bedroom Premier Lodge, from a similar position at the Red Lion, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

FENELLA BUTLER to sales manager, Thistle and Mount Charlotte Hotels, handling client companies in the energy sector, from national account manager, Consort Hotels.

KATE NEWMAN to sales manager, the Selfridge Hotel, London, from corporate sales manager at the Kensington Hilton.
