Mezzanine on a new level

Mezzanine Group, the owner and operator of Smollensky's restaurants and London club Attica, recorded a 16.3% increase in turnover in the six months to 2 December 2001. It rose to £5.7m, up from £4.9m for the same period a year earlier.

The group also reduced its pre-tax loss by 14% to £1.2m, from £1.4m in 2000.

Chairman Roddy Sutherland said: "Our core businesses of restaurants and clubs have performed well, despite a downturn in the London market after the tragic events of 11 September."

The Smollensky's restaurants continue to perform well, the group said.

Mezzanine had planned to open a Smollensky's in east London's Canary Wharf this month, but it is now not expected to open until April because of an overrun by the builder.
