More British Meat winners

The organisers of the British Meat Awards have announced the winners of the Heathcare Chef of the Year and Contract Catering Chef of the Year categories following their recent cook-offs at British Meat's head offices in Milton Keynes earlier this month.

Darren Fothergill, catering manager at the Amerind Grove Nursing Home in Ashton, Bristol, clinched the Healthcare Chef of the Year category. His winning dish comprised marinated fillet of pork with a shallot and Madeira jus. Runners-up in this category were Geoff Sutton, head chef of Southampton General Hospital, who finished second, and John Murray, head chef of Westminster Healthcare, in third place.

Among the judges for this category were Mark Hix, head chef at the Ivy, London, who is also a member of the NHS Culinary Taskforce, Neil Watson-Jones, of the Hospital Caterers Association, and Tony O'Reilly, consultant chef for British Meat.

In the Contract Catering Chef of the Year cook-off, Emily Holbrook, a chef de partie from Hasbro/Sodexho, Basingstoke, Hampshire, scooped her category title with a dish featuring slow-braised pork belly. Second place went to Emma Barnes, head chef at Aramark's Andersen's contract, while third place went to James Davies, manager for Talkington Bates in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

Judges for this category were magazine publisher Alan Dewberry, John Retallick, chairman of the judges at Hotelympia, and O'Reilly.

An overall winner, who will be awarded the British Meat Chef of the Year title and a prize of £2,000, will be selected from the seven category winners and will be announced shortly.

  • In last week's Caterer (21 March) we incorrectly named the winner of the Hotel/ Restaurant Chef of the Year category as Marc Williamson. This should have read Marc Wilkinson, head chef of the Latymer restaurant at Pennyhill Park in Bagshot, Surrey. Sorry, Marc.
