New extension annoys golfers at the old 17th

A new three-storey extension to the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, Fife, is provoking fierce controversy, amidst claims that it blocks the favourite shot of the golfing greats at the legendary 17th road hole tee - a right to left drive across the face of the main hotel to cut out a dogleg.

The views of the famous course from the 21-bedroom extension may suit guests. But local golf professional Jim Farmer said: "As well as the impeachment on the professional line of play, I am concerned about the safety aspect for people staying in a hotel extension only 56 yards from the 17th tee where the prevailing wind can carry golf balls in its direction."

The extension will be ready in May and is already booked for the Millennium Open in July.

A Fife planning officer said: "It seems strange that any potential problem has not been raisedearlier, given the number ofprofessionals using the course, including the Dunhill Cup golfers who played the 17th hole last autumn when construction work was well under way."
