No to ‘simplistic' Dublin bed tax

An Irish tourism chief has rejected a proposed 3% bed tax on tourists in Dublin as "dangerously simplistic".

The proposal from the Dublin International Sports Council has brought a storm of criticism from hoteliers.

The council argues that facilities that attract and are used by tourists should be partly maintained by money taken from them.

But the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation's director, Brendan Leahy, dismissed the idea. He said: "The suggestion shows a lack of understanding of the dynamics of tourism, and is not one which will find any support in the industry."
