NY's Public lifts Beard awards

Public, the New York restaurant at which London-based chef-restaurateurs Peter Gordon and Anna Hansen consult, has won two high-profile hospitality awards.

The restaurant, in the city's Nolita district, last week walked away with the 2004 James Beard Foundation awards for Outstanding Restaurant Design and Outstanding Restaurant. The annual awards are highly coveted in the US restaurant industry and recognise excellence in all aspects of the culinary world, front and back of house.

Public opened in November last year. It was inspired by Gordon and Hansen's successful Providores restaurant in London's Marylebone - winner of the 2003 Newcomer of the Year Catey - and was the brainchild of US architect Adam Farmerie and his brother Brad, who worked with Gordon and Hansen in London at both the Sugar Club and the Providores.

The designers of the restaurant are Greg Bradshaw, Adam Farmerie, Kristina O'Neal and William Harris of New York-based design firm AvroKo.

Although Gordon and Hansen have no financial stake in the restaurant, they travel to New York regularly to work at Public.

In April, Public won a gong for Best Brunch in the Eighth Time Out New York Eat Out Awards, It was also nominated in the same awards' Most Innovative Dish in New York category for Brad Farmerie's seared kangaroo, coriander falafel with tahini and lemon sauce, and green pepper relish.
