Do you think the Government should introduce a minimum wage for 16- to 17-year-olds?

Yes, because if we offer a better minimum wage we will attract a better calibre of younger workers, who will stay a while and offer our businesses greater consistency.
Mike McDougall, managing director, Inntown Pub Company

I'm very much for it - I don't believe in exploiting people. The industry's got a bad reputation. If we had that, it would attract more youngsters with potential - make them feel more secure within the industry.
Tony Borthwick, chef-proprietor, Plumed Horse restaurant, Crossmichael Frankly, I believe in paying above the minimum wage irrespective of age - a wage that is commensurate with the ability and knowledge of the job. I think government intervention is irrelevant.
Robin Hutson, chairman and managing director, Hotel du Vin I've found that to get decent staff I've always had to pay above the minimum wage anyway, so extending the threshold wouldn't have a direct effect on me.
Gary Levy, owner, Stepping Stone restaurant, Battersea
