Restaurateur plans £60m sports centre

Restaurateur Petros Birakos is planning to build a £60m sports complex to help his son's ice hockey career.

Birakos, who runs the Brasserie Pierre in Clifton, Bristol, has submitted plans for a 3,000-seat complex on 16 acres beside the M32 at Hambrook, Bristol.

It will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, ice hockey rink and basketball courts, as well as a restaurant and bar.

Birakos came up with the project when his 15-year-old son was picked for the Great Britain ice hockey squad but had to travel to Swindon in Wiltshire to train.

If planners back the scheme, Birakos hopes to get further support from Sport England.
