Savoy Society bid to double membership

The society of former employees of the Savoy group of hotels has launched a recruitment campaign to attract more members, it announced at its annual general meeting at Claridge's last week.

The Savoy Society, chaired by Andrew Phillips, general manager of Dukes hotel in London, has 150 members but wants to double this to 300 by next year. All former employees of the group are eligible to join.

The society was set up 11 years ago by ex-Savoy group chairman Sir Hugh Wontner and now has members all over the world.

Phillips said: "It allows people to keep in touch. It's about networking and it's a good social opportunity."

In order to reach younger members the society is cutting down on expensive dinners in favour of more modest events. The society costs £25 to join and has an annual membership fee of £20.
