Scotland creates smoking charter
Scotland has launched its own voluntary code on smoking in public places to pre-empt calls for mandatory legislation.
Like the charter launched in England last year, the Scottish charter aims to encourage firms to provide facilities for smokers and non-smokers, using clear signs and air-cleaning and ventilation systems.
It differs by expanding its coverage into the tourism sector, applying to art galleries, shops and sports centres as well as hotels, restaurants and pubs.
It is backed by a number of bodies, including the British Hospitality Association and the Scottish Tourism Forum.
Maureen McKerrow, vice-president of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said at the charter's launch: "If we do not set the standard and maintain it voluntarily, legislation to eradicate smoking in public place could be a death knell for many small establishments."
The warning was backed by the minister for health in the Scottish parliament, Susan Deacon.
