Scottish & Newcastle to give all business development managers BIIAB-approved training

Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company (S&NPC) has become the first leased pub group to commit all its business development managers (BDMs) to a BIIAB-approved BDM training programme.

The S&NPC BDM programme is an enhanced version of the BIIAB BDM training programme, tailored to address the specific needs of S&NPC lessees.

The BDMs will also be committing up to three times the amount of time required by the BIIAB to this programme.

The customised year-long training requires S&NPC BDMs to gain a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by different types of pubs and the strategies needed to grow these businesses.

Every element of a lessee's business from recruitment to capital expenditure, understanding profit and loss to merchandising is covered by the programme, which will be implemented not only in the classroom, but also with one-to-one input from line managers and coaches as well as compulsory reading and internet learning.

Chris Moore, S&NPC trading director, said: "We fully support the industry move to encourage and recognise a more professional BDM role and are keen to support the BIIAB training and accreditation programme.

"As a division of Heineken we are in a unique position to capitalise on the company's insights and to share with our lessees an in-depth understanding of consumer behaviour, brands and merchandising. This more detailed knowledge transfer will ensure BDMs have a thorough understanding of the individual business dynamics faced by lessees.

"SNPC's course goes above and beyond the existing requirements for BDMs to obtain a certificate in multiple retail management, in a bid to provide lessees with the best possible advice."
