The relatively young Denominación de Origen Ribero del Duero has responded to worldwide enthusiasm for its wines by issuing a smartcard to its 6,500 growers.
Operating through compact computer terminals in each bodega, the Consejo Regulador monitors harvest procedures, yields and grape movements, as well as storing information about the characteristics of the land and grape varieties cultivated. This provides on-the-spot information about harvest conditions day-by-day, plus data for "future decision-making".
