Smith applauds hospitality

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith, logged on to the Caterer Web site, unveiled at Hotelympia 2000 at Earls Court this week.

At the official opening of Hotelympia on Monday, Smith commended the industry and its employees.

He said: "A lot of what happens in the hospitality industry depends on the skills and talents of the people working in it. As a country, it's an area where we have been making very real progress over recent years. Some of the skills displayed by chefs at Hotelympia are testimony to that.

"If it had been suggested 15 years ago that Britain would become a major culinary nation, it would have been laughed out of court. We are doing well," he concluded.
