Speaking up for silent mobile phones
I read Jenny Webster's opinion about mobile phones (Caterer, 11 May, page 19) with interest.
As a person who works in the marketing side of the industry, I am constantly on the move, as are most of my superiors and contacts. We therefore rely very heavily on the use of mobile phones to communicate - and yes, that sometimes means evenings and weekends, too.
However, to my knowledge, all mobiles have a "silent" mode and a volume control. If I am in a public place, I simply put it onto silent mode and remove myself from said place to make or take a call. That way I can take my call where it will not intrude on others.
I understand that some will not be so considerate, but it is a compromise rather than banning the use of mobile phones completely.
A polite notice asking that the above be complied with may work. Otherwise, into the drip tray with the offending phone.
