Staff turnover tops 34%

STAFF turnover in the hotel and leisure industries is higher than in any other, says the Institute of Personnel and Development's annual labour turnover survey.

Hotel and leisure companies surveyed reported a turnover rate of more than 34%, compared with just 15% in craft occupations in general.

And the cost of replacing staff has risen significantly. Replacing a single skilled worker in the sector costs £1,922 on average, the survey found.

More than one-fifth of craft organisations have experienced recruitment difficulties in the past year, and vacancies in these businesses took on average 10 weeks to fill. In comparison, across all industry sectors, the shortest time it took to fill a vacancy was five weeks.
