Survey predicts upturn in US visitors

More Americans are expected to visit the UK next year compared with this year, according to a survey by marketing consultants Research For Travel (RFT).

It asked 1,000 regular US travellers how they felt about holidaying in the UK. Some 79% said they were confident about holidaying in Britain, while of the 200 business travellers questioned, 89% said they were confident about flying to the UK. Few had security worries. In fact, more had faith in the safety of flying to Europe than in the security of their domestic airlines.

Visitors to Europe from North America fell by 17% to 330,000 in September. Figures for November, released tomorrow (7 December), are expected to be worse.
