Bookmaker Fred Done, who owns a national chain of more than 150 betting shops, has opened a 100-seat restaurant in Manchester. Called the Lincoln, it offers French/Californian-style food.

Former Torquay hoteliers Alan and Diana Gripton have taken over the Slab House Inn country pub and restaurant at East Horrington, Somerset, from Peter and Lynn Owen. Agent Robert Barry & Co was asking more than £495,000 for the freehold.

Joseph and Alison Martin have bought the seven-bedroom Laird's Hotel (above) in Carnoustie, Angus, from Maggie and Ian Laird for close to the £200,000 asked by agent Christie & Co. Mr Martin was an executive chef at hotels in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Michele and Liz Sardone have sold the 20-bedroom Beansheaf Hotel & Restaurant in the Vale of Pickering, North Yorkshire, to Eddie Tonks, of the Ship Inn at Langtoft, Lincolnshire. Agent Christie & Co was seeking £345,000 for the freehold.

Brentford publicans Ken and Diane Martin have purchased the Wheatsheaf Inn in Grayswood, Surrey, off an asking price of £395,000. The food-led roadside inn has six en suite bedrooms and was sold by Rex Colman through agent Robert Barry & Co.
