Visitors prefer the green, green grass

Public gardens increased their popularity as visitor attractions last year, according to Sightseeing in the UK 1994, published by the English Tourist Board (ETB).

The report reveals that spending at tourist attractions in the UK rose to more than £1b for the first time.

While the number of visits to gardens increased by 4% on average in 1994, the number of visits to wildlife attractions shrunk by 2% and those to historic properties by 1%.
