Wealthy make riches abroad
Hotel owners feature in the latest Sunday Times list of the richest people in Britain and the world, but usually because they have made their money elsewhere.
In the UK, Terry Matthews, who ranks joint seventh, is the owner of the £120m Celtic Manor resort near Newport, Wales. But he made his estimated £1.2b fortune in electronics and telecommunications in Canada.
The Barclay brothers, owners of the Ritz and ranked joint 20th with an estimated worth of £1b, also made the bulk of their fortune elsewhere.
Those for whom the hotel business contributes significantly to their total worth are Jasminder Singh and family, owners of the Radisson Edwardian chain who are in 73rd place with an estimated worth of £400m, while Sir Rocco Forte, of RF hotels, shares 87th place with £350m.
Jamie Oliver, of Naked Chef fame, is estimated to be worth £5m and ranks 76th on the list for the 100 richest young people.
