Website offers helping hand for smaller shops

Recent market research into London workers' lunchtime habits shows that many want to get away from their desks but don't want to waste their break queuing. The research by Offtolunch.co.uk used existing shopping patterns and consumer focus groups to reach its conclusions. It said many workers wanted to use sandwich shops and delis but found the queues too long, particularly as their lunch breaks were getting shorter.

In response the firm has launched a website, www.offtolunch.co.uk, which gives delis and sandwich shops an opportunity to advertise free. Customers can place orders online. Managing director Philip Atkins said it gave smaller shops the opportunity to compete with high-street chains and staff restaurants.

"It's a bit like David and Goliath," he said. "This service allows small businesses, without the marketing knowledge or know-how, to access an online ordering system and compete with the bigger boys."
