Wetherspoon reports early sales surge

Pub operator JD Wetherspoon has announced strong first-quarter sales of £110.3m, an increase of 32% on the same period last year.

A mild autumn helped like-for-like sales increase by 6% in the 13 weeks to 29 October. Last year sales increased by 18% in the comparative period.

The group opened 20 pubs in the first quarter. A further two have opened since 29 October, bringing the total to 450.

The openings included the first two Wetherspoon pubs in Northern Ireland, where a further four are planned to open before the end of the financial year.
