Profits plummet
Profits at Spanish hotel group Sol Meliá plummeted by 93% to €3.8m (£2.4m) in the six months to 30 June. Turnover dipped by 3.3% to €477.7m (£302m) and revenue per available room (revpar) fell by 7.3% to €43.4m (£27.4m).
Another great Dane
Radisson SAS has opened its 11th hotel in Denmark. The 88-bedroom Radisson SAS Silkeborg has four meeting rooms, a ballroom with space for 100 people, and a 120-seat restaurant.
Four Seasons fall
Turnover and profits at Canadian hotel company Four Seasons fell in the six months to 30 June. Turnover fell by 14% to C$145.5m (£60.2m) and net profit fell by 43% to C$25.8m (£10.7m).
Larger losses
Dallas-based hotel group Wyndham reported increased losses in the six months to 30 June of $384.2m (£251m), up by 16% on those reported for the same period in 2001. Turnover fell by 11.4% to $1b (£653m).
Proper Charlies
Chefs from around the world will converge on Chicago on the weekend of 17-18 August and make their way to Charlie Trotter's restaurant to honour his achievements since he opened his establishment in 1987.
Orient depressed
Bermuda-based hotel, restaurant, tourist train and cruise ship operator Orient-Express Hotels reported a 38% dip in net profit in the six months to 30 June to $12m (£7.8m). Turnover fell by 1.3% to $132.8m (£86.7m).
