Youth wage rate may change

Following the rise in the minimum wage last week, the Government may now scrap the reduced youth rate and replace it with the minimum for adults.

From 1 October, the national minimum wage rose from £4.10 to £4.20 for workers aged 22 and over. The youth rate for those aged between 18 and 21 went up from £3.50 to £3.60 an hour.

The British Hospitality Association's deputy chief executive, Martin Couchman, said it was against scrapping the youth rate because of the added cost for businesses. The Low Pay Commission is next due to report its recommendations to the Government in February.
