Four-star hotel receives zero hygiene rating

The 319-room Hyatt Regency hotel in Birmingham has been told to make ‘urgent improvements' by food safety officers after receiving a score of zero under the Food Hygiene Rating scheme.

An inspection on 8 June 2016 found the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building required ‘urgent improvement'. This included having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to ensure good food hygiene.

The report found ‘major improvement' was necessary for the management of food safety, requiring adequate systems or checks to be put in place to ensure all staff are knowledgeable about food satety and that food is safe for consumption.

However, the actual handling of food including preparation, cooking, storage, reheating and cooling was found to be ‘generally satisfactory'.

A Hyatt Regency spokeswoman told ITV that three days prior to the inspection, flooding affected conditions at the hotel.

She said: "We did have a visit during the flash floods that hit Birmingham. All the findings were rectified within 48 hours. We have had two visits since and they are very happy we have met, and exceeded, expectations."
