Chatsworth Estate's Cavendish hotel to add four bedrooms

The four-AA-star, 24-bedroom Cavendish hotel at Baslow, on the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire, is to expand following the conversion of a coach house into four additional bedrooms.

Planning permission has been granted for the extension of the property, which until recently was occupied as a tenanted residence. The Cavendish hotel is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Architects Haxton Koyander of Chesterfield will draw up the designs for the building, while the interior will be created by Rachel McLane, in conjunction with the Duchess of Devonshire. Antiques expert Jonathan Bourne will source furniture and objects of interest.

The Duchess of Devonshire said that the coach house will provide "a luxurious yet practical addition" to the hotel.

"The rooms will be all about creature comforts with a striking style whilst being sympathetic to the fabric of the building," she said. "From power points to power showers, our attention to detail will ensure guests will want for nothing."

As well as expanding the number of bedrooms in the hotel to 28, the coach house will be able to be hired on an exclusive use basis by guests.

Philip Joseph, managing director of the Cavendish, added: "The coach house is adjacent to the hotel's Grade II-listed building and as such it is important we maintain its integrity and safeguard the historical importance."

Once known as the Peacock Inn, the hotel became part of the Duke of Devonshire's estate in around 1830 and in the early 1970s was restyled as the Cavendish hotel. It also features the two-AA-rosette Gallery restaurant, headed by chef Alan Hill.

The Cavendish hotel, which is operated by Peak Hotel Management, is owned by Chatsworth Trust, which also owns Devonshire Hotels & Restaurants.
