Reflecting on 2022 with The Caterer's cover stars

23 December 2022 by

The Caterer's 2022 covers featuring chefs, hoteliers, entrepreneurs, illustrations and dishes provide a glimpse of a year gone by.

2022 has been a big year for hospitality, and The Caterer has been here to report on the news, celebrate success stories and shine a light in hard times.

We have published 50 issues of the magazine this year and after much discussion have chosen 10 of our favourites from an amazing selection. View the full issues here.

21 January – The Plant-Based Issue

This issue explored the potential of plant-based foods. As vegetarian and vegan diets continue to grow in popularity, we spoke to those getting creative with vegetables, peeked around hotels making every aspect of their offer vegan-friendly, looked at fast-food businesses taking the market by storm and – of course – revealed the latest product releases.

The next Plant-Based Summit from The Caterer takes place on 26 January 2023. Sign up to find out how to manipulate your menus and maximise your veggie offering.

4 February – Return of the retro

For one week only we went back to the 1970s as The Caterer turned retro to explore the restaurants planting one foot in the past to reinvent their offer. We also enjoyed going back through the archives to pick out some of our favourite covers from years past.

25 March – Glam rock

Carrie Wicks set out to break rules with the launch of Chateau Denmark in London's Denmark Street. The hotel's ooms pay homage to gothic, punk or Victoriana, with staff dressed to kill and bars in the bathrooms.

15 April – Brothers in arms

Despite one of the brothers suffering a cold, Ferhat and Sertaç Dirik gave an excellent photoshoot for this front cover. The trio spoke about taking over their father's restaurant Mangal 2 and their surprise at becoming Instagram-famous.

29 April – Your move

Gary Usher offered shares in Elite Bistros in order to crowdfund to expand the company. Although he didn't quite reach his target, the crowdfunding king managed to exceed his target through tried and tested means.

29 July – Love bites

The Romulo group welcomed a new little sister into its Filipino restaurant family. We visited Kasa and Kin, the three-in-one eatery in the heart of London's Soho, for some comfort food.

16 September – Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022

We were proud to pay tribute to Her Majesty with this front cover. The hospitality industry shared their memories of working for the Queen and this issue also saw us speak to Native at Browns about putting squirrel on the menu.

7 October – A bigger splash

April Jackson, who recently made an appearance on Masterchef: The Professionals, graced our cover during Black History Month. She spoke about her mission to change the perception of Jamaican culture through hospitality.

28 October – Bright future

When we saw this iconic photo of Kerth Gumbs we knew it had to be our cover shot. The chef has some exciting plans in the pipeline and we can't wait to see what 2023 has in store for him.

2 December – Opportunity Nokx

Nokx Majozi has taken the reigns from Calum Franklin for her dream job – leading the Pie Room at the Rosewood London, taking ownership of the famed ornate pie tins. The joy she feels in her role came through not only in this cover photo, but also in her interview.
