Connaught bartender is top of the world

Erik Lorincz from The Connaught Bar at London's Connaught hotel has shaken, stirred and poured his way to the top of the world to win the Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year 2010 award.

Held in Athens, the finale of the competition saw 24 of the globe's leading bartenders go head to head over four days of challenges. More than 9,000 bartenders originally entered the award a year ago.

The final included blind tastings, a written test and the preparation and presentation of several cocktails.

"This is a dream to win such a prestigious award; to be judged by some of my heroes such as Salvatore Calabrese and Dale DeGroff has really inspired me," said Lorincz, who has worked at the 54-seat Connaught Bar for two years.

"This is a true testament to what the Connaught Bar stands for: innovative mixology that brings the cocktail experience to life," said Santino Cicciari, the Connaught's bar manager.
