Travelodge begins construction on six new hotels
Budget hotel chain Travelodge has started work on six new UK hotels today following an investment of £41.5m in the development of its portfolio.
The new properties will together feature 579 rooms and create 95 new jobs.
The largest of the six new hotels is an office conversion in Glasgow city centre. The £12m investment in the 171-room hotel is being funded by Business Premises Renovation Fund and the aim is to have it finished in time for the start of the Commonwealth Games in July 2014.
Construction has also begun on two new London properties, in Greenwich and Raynes Park, taking the total number of Travelodge hotels in the capital to 62.
The 104-room hotel in Greenwich will form part of Cathedral Group's ‘The Movement' development and it is being funded by R&D LLC. The hotel represents an investment of £8.3m. Investment in the Raynes Park property, featuring 86 rooms, is £6.9m funded by a private investor. Both properties are scheduled to open next September.
The last of the six new hotels is a 93-room property in Winnersh and represents a £6.5m investment. Parks Trust has purchased the site and will fund the development, expected to open December 2014.
All of the hotel rooms in the six properties will feature Travelodge's new room design, which is currently being rolled out across the estate as part of a £223m brand refresh programme that kicked off in March 2013. To date 153 hotels and 13,331 rooms have been refitted.
"We are very excited to be starting on site to build six hotels today in prime locations across the UK," commented Paul Harvey, Travelodge managing director for property. "They will be a great addition to the Travelodge portfolio and offer consumers more choice for good value accommodation."
Upon completion of the six new properties, Travelodge's portfolio will include 517 hotels and 38,359 rooms.
