Supplier press release: Bernard Matthews Hailed ‘Unsung Hero' at SUBWAY Awards 2012

Bernard Matthews Foodservice has confirmed its position as an outstanding supplier in QSR and an "unsung hero" after winning a top accolade at SUBWAY's annual TUKI Convention awards ceremony on 10th May.

The British turkey specialist received this year's Gold Standard Quality Award from the High Street chain, one of just seven awards for excellence presented at the Telford International Centre event.

Specifically, the accolade was awarded for its Quality British Cooked Sliced Turkey Breast, a succulent product specially developed by Bernard Matthews for SUBWAY's Low Fat sub range.

The fact that SUBWAY's Turkey Breast sub is one of the company's top selling, low fat subs in the UK is testament to the quality of the British turkey product.

A spokesman for SUBWAY said: "This supplier is a household name, but a bit of an unsung hero in the SUBWAY system. Since they joined the team, they have delivered a popular product line week in, week out, without fuss, to a consistently high quality standard.

"Their expertise scale in this product, which extends across Europe, has enabled them to raise the quality bar whilst remaining competitive, a highly desirable combination. They have an excellent supply chain, high service levels and a very consistent standard of product quality performance."

SUBWAY's Turkey Breast sub is one of eight subs in the Low Fat range, which all contain less than 3g of fat per 100g and less than 1.5g of saturated fats, as well as being free from HVOs. In addition, the range, identified by a healthy heart symbol and supported by Heart Research UK, is low in salt to meet the government's Responsibility Deal.

Duncan Marsh, general manager for Bernard Matthews Foodservice, said the Quality British Cooked Sliced Turkey Breast product was spot on for the low fat range as skinless turkey breast was naturally low in saturated fat, while the supplier was also 100% committed to keeping salt levels to a minimum.

"We work closely with SUBWAY to react to changing consumer needs and, most recently, have developed a new, lower salt recipe in line with SUBWAY's commitment. We are extremely proud to receive this award and will continue to help the company excel as a leader in the QSR sector."

By working with Bernard Matthews Foodservice, SUBWAY is also able to guarantee provenance. Fiercely proud of its heritage, the company cares for each bird on its own farms across Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire in line with the Farm Animal Welfare Council's ‘5 Freedoms'.

Each farm is Quality British Turkey and Assured Foods (Red Tractor) certified and welcomes visits from Defra and independent welfare bodies. Each bird is fed a nutritious cereal-based diet, the majority being wheat grown locally and prepared at the company's own mill near Kings Lynn for the highest quality and control, plus some of the lowest food miles in the industry.
