UK celebrates 250 years of the sandwich

2012 is not just the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics - it also celebrates the 250th anniversary of Britain's favourite on-the-go snack, the sandwich, which was invented by the fourth Earl of Sandwich so he could eat without interrupting his lengthy gambling sessions.

Britons now buy more than 11 billion sandwiches a year and the sector supports in excess of 300,000 jobs.

The British Sandwich Association](http://www.sandwich.org.uk/) has set up a new website, [www.lovesarnies.com](http://www.lovesarnies.com), in readiness for a range of activities that will include consumer competitions and a Sandwich of the Month campaign. The final heats of its annual Sandwich Designer of the Year Awards will fall during British Sandwich Week, which runs from May 13 to 19.
