12m Brits to take a Bank Holiday trip in Britain
Almost 12m people in Britain (24% of the population) will take a Bank Holiday trip in the country, and 9.9m of those will take that trip in England according to VisitEngland's Bank Holiday Trip Tracker survey.
The figures show that the number of people who plan to take a break in Britain and England during the August Bank Holiday period this year is as high as last year. Around 3% plan to visit Scotland, 3% plan to visit Wales, and just 6% are planning a trip abroad over the period.
James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland commented: "With so much to see and do, literally on our doorsteps, it's no wonder Brits are choosing to spend more of their free time enjoying England. The forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend is a great opportunity to enjoy some of the country's best events and experiences.
Holiday plans are varied with shopping (55%), and taking part in an outdoor activity such as walking or cycling (48%) among the most popular activities planned. Almost half intend to explore their local area and over a third plan to visit the countryside. The next most popular activities include going to the theatre or cinema (31%), going to the beach (28%), watching a sporting event (28%), visiting a small town (25%), and visiting a garden (21%).
