American travellers slam UK hotels

The hotel trade is the worst business in the UK tourist industry, according to a survey of opinion among North American leisure travellers.

Almost all the 567 visitors questioned in the survey criticised the very high prices (especially in London), small rooms, poor service and indifferent food in UK hotels.

In a ratings list of 10 tourist attractions and amenities, restaurants came in eighth position and were also criticised for being too expensive, although an improvement in quality and variety had been noted in recent years.

The top three attractions were museums, theatres and pubs, which the visitors said offered great value for money.

The survey concluded that "persuading more people to come from the US will require UK businesses to look long and hard at their pricing structures".

The Internet was found to be the most effective marketing tool to attract visitors.

The survey was commissioned by online guide London Elite, tel: 020 8987 2752.
