Gambling laws ‘will threaten pubs'
Pubs are likely to be the biggest losers if the proposed changes to Britain's gambling laws go ahead, according to a Government Select Committee report.
Research submitted to the committee by marketing and consultancy company The Henley Centre estimated that revenue from slot machines in pubs would drop by an average of 10% due to increased competition. It warned that the loss of revenue could lead to closures.
The Government is currently working on legislation to deregulate the gaming industry, now worth more than £40b annually.
Proposals include looser regulation of where casinos can be built, the relaxation of advertising of casinos, and the introduction of larger numbers of gaming machines with higher-stake prizes.
Many hospitality businesses, including Rank Group and the Hilton Group, have welcomed the Government's draft bill, published in November.
