Government move to support community pubs gets BBPA backing
A newly launched government-funded strategy to support community ownership of pubs has been given the thumbs up by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
The association's CEO Brigid Simmonds said the Community Pub Business Support Programme, jointly funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government and The Power To Change Trust, would give vital support to struggling pubs.
She added: "Local people facing the loss of their pub risk losing something special that binds the community together. BBPA has long been a supporter of Pub is The Hub who do so much good work in this area.
Simmonds said the funding would help make pubs into thriving community centres.
"Bringing local services such as a shop, post office or library into the pub can make a real difference, and they are often services that wouldn't be viable on their own," she explained.
"There is a huge amount of expertise needed to run a modern pub, from catering and hospitality to licensing law and regulation. This funding will bring targeted help to those wanting to overcome the challenges and help keep their pub thriving."
