Overhauling past glories

With its grand Victorian heritage, Glasgow has never been short of a good-looking building or two. Next year sees the city claim its due as UK City of Architecture and Design 1999.

The celebrations and exhibitions neatly coincide with the overhaul of George Square - the Trafalgar Square of Scotland. A major new £35m shopping and leisure scheme is planned by developer Jarlaw at the landmark listed former Post Office head office - proving that former glories can be used in new and exciting ways.

Opportunities in the capital

The planning debate is somewhat complicated when it comes to the sprawling urban mass that is Greater London. Government guidelines continue to direct new property development towards town centres. But sites suitable for major new schemes are few and far between in the overflowing capital.

Now, in one of the last such opportunities, a huge chunk of Uxbridge's core is about to be resuscitated. A £100m mixed-use beast will boast shops, flats, that ever-popular staple the multiplex cinema, plus opportunities for up to a dozen bar and restaurant operators. Most interesting will be a reconstructed medieval timber-framed house discovered by accident in the town 10 years ago by developer Royal & Sun Alliance.
