Welsh hotelier loses rate rise battle in court

An Anglesey hotelier who refused to pay the full rise in his business rates has been ordered to stump up by Holyhead Magistrates Court, or face a visit from the bailiffs.

David Robertson, proprietor of Ye Olde Bulls Head at Beaumaris, went to court to protest about the Welsh Assembly's decision to abolish transitional relief for firms with a rateable value of £25,000 or above (Caterer, 9November).

Robertson said he would have to turn over an extra £1,000 a week to cover the rise in rates from £12,254 to £34,196. He warned that the rise would make businesses unsaleable, discourage investment and threaten jobs.

The court ordered Robertson to pay £24,606.70 plus £20 costs in one payment, although he is to meet the county council to discuss a less punishing payment schedule.
