Sketch Gallery assistant manager Hubert Mallet killed by black cab

Hubert Mallet, the assistant manager of the Gallery brasserie at Sketch in Mayfair, has died after being hit by a black cab just after 2am on Monday night.

Mallet, from Normandy in France, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 2:20am after being hit by the car in Shoreditch, east London, after having left a party with colleagues at Sketch earlier in the evening. He was not said to be drunk.

His girlfriend of a year, drama student Maria Gabriela Ellery, reportedly held his hand and lay beside him as paramedics attended to the scene outside Trapeze Bar on Great Eastern Street, reports the http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/young-restaurant--rising-star-hit-by-taxi-and-killed-on-night-out-in-east-london-10007221.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Evening Standard.

Mallet was 25 years old and came to the UK to develop his career four years ago. He had worked his way to the assistant manager position at the brasserie, which was designed by Turner prize-winning artist Martin Creed.

Flatmate Jean-Jacques Leveque, 31, told the London newspaper: "Everyone loved Hubert because he was approachable and kind to everyone, no matter what. He was 25 years old and just starting his life and that has just stopped. We came down [to Great Eastern Street] to say goodbye and pay our respects."

Ellery said: "He had the best heart in the world and he just knew how to make me laugh. We were the best thing that ever happened to each other. I can't believe he's gone."

Mallet's family has been informed.
