Harbour Hotels – the group that focuses on coastal locations in the south of England – has announced the acquisition of three properties.
In addition to confirming a new hotel in Brighton, previously announced by The Caterer, the company, which operates under parent company Nicolas James Group, will also be launching a second hotel in Salcombe and its first city centre hotel in Bristol to take its portfolio to 12.
The 77-bedroom Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa will be located within a seafront property and incorporate the city’s only rooftop swimming pool. Currently occupied by Umi hotel, the sale to Harbour Hotels will mark the end of the Umi hotel brand in the UK.

In Salcombe, Harbour Hotels has acquired what was the 35-bedroom Tides Reach hotel on South Sands beach from the Eden Hotel Collection, to become the group’s second property in the town alongside the 50-bedroom Salcombe Harbour hotel & spa.
Eden bought the hotel in early 2014 with a view to redevelop it as a luxury 50-bedroom hotel. However, despite receiving planning permission for a £12m new hotel, Eden decided to abandon the project due to local opposition.
Mark Chambers, managing director of Eden Hotel Collection, said: “Having invested so much time, effort and money in securing planning consent we are obviously disappointed not to see this project through. But it was clearly not a development some in the community wished to see, so we will instead focus our energy and investment elsewhere.
“We are however pleased to have concluded terms with Harbour Hotels who are well established locally and whose plans for the site will complement their investments in Salcombe.”
Harbour Hotels now intends to create a new 40-bedroom wing at the hotel alongside developing 10 apartments within the existing building.

Nicolas Roach, chairman of Nicolas James Group, said: “The design will be in keeping with the area and closer in appearance to the neighbouring properties such as the adjacent South Sands hotel. Having weighed very carefully the planning issues raised locally we are confident that a newly designed informal, relaxed hotel with a spa membership open to local people will be welcomed by the majority.”
Meanwhile in Bristol, Harbour Hotels has acquired two former bank buildings on Corn Street. Once occupied by Lloyds and HSBC, the two Grade II-listed Victorian properties will be linked to create a 42-bedroom hotel, with an events space in one of the building’s imposing banking halls.
All three hotels will feature Harbour Hotels’ Jetty restaurant concept, headed by chef-patron Alex Aitken, and a spa.

The Brighton and Bristol hotels will open in summer 2016, with the Tides Reach Harbour hotel launching in summer 2017.
