Pentahotels under fire for ‘sexist' toilet signs

German hotel group Pentahotels has come under fire on social media for what some Twitter users deemed to be a "sexist" toilet sign in one of its UK properties.

The sign, photographed by head of UK Theatre Cassie Chadderton, depicts a figure on each door - one with the word "football" above its head in a thought bubble, the other with the word "shopping".

Chadderton's tweet, which was directed at Pentahotels' Twitter account, asked "Hi @pentahotels, just wondering if you know that we're in the 21st century now?"

The post clearly struck a nerve with other social media users and since appearing less than 24 hours ago, it has been shared nearly 400 times and favourited more than 500 times.

The hotel firm, which has 28 hotels including six in the UK, responded with this tweet:

Yes, we know. And men also shop alot, just happens to be for football gear
