The Hero of Maida
The Hero of Maida has opened on the site of the former Truscott Arms in London’s Maida Vale. It is the second pub with rooms from Harcourt Inns, a collection of pubs from former Racine chef-patron Henry Harris and Holborn Leisure founder James McCulloch, following the Coach in Clerkenwell.

The pub’s signature Sunday roast menu has been reinstated, with classics including seven-hour, slow-roasted shoulder of lamb and rosemary. Seasonal vegetables are championed in daily changing menus inspired by provincial French cooking. The bar serves salads, tarts and specials throughout the day.

The pub is named after General John Stuart, who led British troops to victory in the Battle of Maida in Italy during the Napoleonic Wars, and after which Maida Vale is named.

The pub’s original details, such as ceiling roses and oak floors, have been kept. The ground floor of the Victorian corner site is built around a zinc-topped bar. The artwork is a mix of contemporary and vintage equestrian paintings acknowledging the Napoleonic heritage of Maida Vale.

Family-run restaurant 40 Dean Street has relaunched in London’s Soho, serving classic Italian dishes as well as regional specialities at affordable prices. With a cosy, bistro-style interior, the restaurant also serves Italian wines and beers and classic Italian cocktails, including Aperol Spritz, Negroni and Bellini.

Arch 13 at Connolly’s
Birmingham’s oldest wine merchant, Connolly’s, has opened a new bar, Arch 13. With more than 500 wines and 120 gins, Arch 13 launches with a 23-strong wine selection, cocktails, and a menu devoted to Madeira wines showcasing vintage bottles dating from 1968. The food menu includes cheese and meat boards, which can be created bespoke.

Zuma founders have opened their first Inko Nito Japanese robatayaki restaurant in London’s Soho, with food cooked over charcoal. The new 3,100 sq ft casual-dining concept serves sharing dishes and cocktails.
