Luxury hotel collection Red Carnation Hotels has eradicated 15 single-use plastic (SUP) items from its hotel operations and highlighted examples of sustainable alternatives.
As well as switching out plastic pens for metal pens and pencils, offering wooden or bamboo toothbrushes and collecting guest laundry using reusable fabric laundry bags; breakfast items like cereals, yoghurts and spreads are now served in glass bowls, ramekins and jars instead of individual portion plastic tubs and packets across the group’s portfolio.
The kitchen teams at each hotel are also now using reusable piping bags made from materials such as silicone or nylon. Envelopes with plastic windows, plastic water bottles, plastic straws and plastic cocktail stirrers have also been removed and replaced with reusable or more biodegradable materials, for example takeaway coffee cup lids made from fermented corn starch and pasta straws.
This is part of a wider goal set by Red Carnation’s parent company The Travel Corporation (TTC), and its not-for-profit The TreadRight Foundation, to eradicate all SUPs from operations across all its travel brands by 2022.
Red Carnation has 17 four- and five-star properties worldwide including the Milestone, Hotel 41, the Montague on the Gardens, Egerton House, the Chesterfield Mayfair and the Rubens at the Palace in London; and Summer Lodge and the Acorn Inn in Evershot, Dorset. The group also owns Old Government House and the Duke of Richmond in Guernsey.
