Words from the Wise – Alison Tyler

Alison Tyler, chief executive, CH&Co Commercial, shares her business secrets

Recognise the need for change
I definitely sit in the "embrace change" camp. The key reason I have stayed at CH&Co for 14 years is the dynamic changes we have been through. A successful business needs to be responsive to change around it, whether that be economic conditions, technology or customer preferences. It is also important to recognise people who will resist change and plan how best to get them on side when progress is essential.

Create "entrepreneurs"
Control might have a place in business but entrepreneurial spirit, at all levels, reaps greater benefit. People can only give their best if they can think for themselves and have a feeling of ownership. Share experience and knowledge and by all means mentor people, but they have to find their own way.

Respect youth and new talent
I was always brought up to respect my elders, but too often we don't focus enough on our future generation. My biggest joy at CH&Co is to help create opportunity for those who are hungry to develop. It's one of the reasons we need to keep growing. I don't agree with those who promote the idea that companies can only preserve their culture by staying small. Their people, if ambitious and skilled, will outgrow them if they don't watch out.

Growth also allows for new skills and expertise to come into a business, which also helps the development of your established team, because you never stop learning.

Make the tough decisions
It's much more fun being popular, but too often difficult decisions need to be made. People put off the difficult decisions, fearing confrontation or failure. In my experience, people you work with, as well as clients, need to know you will make those tough calls when needed. Be ruthless in the decision making when needed, but be kind and fair in the execution.

Stay true
Believe in yourself and stay true to your values. Don't take unnecessary short cuts or short-term compromises if it means damaging your brand or reputation. In difficult economic times this can be really tough, but if you are in for the long term, be patient. The path may be slower but it is built on better foundations. People remember the businesses that disappoint, and don't return.

Best advice
If you manage people, don't try to change square pegs to fit round holes. Listen, use your expertise and judgement, focus on a person's natural talents, and find the right opportunity in which they will flourish.
