South African ‘bunny' sandwich concept bunnychow to open in Boxpark, Shoreditch

With 12 different filling choices on the menu, the sandwich shop will offer "bunnies" - hollowed-out bread loaves filled with traditionally-spiced fillings that are said to originate from 1940s in Durban, when Indian sugar workers wanted something sturdy to transport their lunch in.

Flavour combinations will include "Monkey Gland" (meatballs simmered in South African monkey gland sauce) and "BBQ Bunny" (with pulled pork and melted cheese) as well as flatbread versions including lime and chilli crayfish, and citrus chicken.

Sides will include home-made biltong or South African crisps "nik naks", while the bread comes from British brand Celtic Bakers.

Customers will be able to choose whether to sit down on the industrial-look high stools, eat in the outside space, or to "grab and go" - designed to appeal to workers on their lunch break.
