Hospitality Show 2013 review
The Hospitality Show returned to the NEC in Birmingham for three days last month (21-23 January 2013). Here is a showcase of some of the 350-plus exhibitors who gathered for the event.
1. ANOTHER LEVEL
USP Four levels of cooking
Details The Alfa43UK oven is the latest addition from R H Hall. The larger internal cooking chamber allows four levels of cooking, with a bigger space between the cooking trays. The clear glass section of the door is bigger and made up of two pieces of glass, keeping the outside cool to the touch while maintaining the perfect temperature in the cooking chamber.

4. GRILLING INNOVATION
USP Faster, safer and energy efficient
Details The British developed Synergy 900 claims to be a major advance in grilling. The winner of a Hotelympia 2012 innovation award, the Synergy 900's burner features a patented burner that mixes gas with air to increase heat. The heat is forced across the ceramic base, speeding up cooking and atomising the juices that normally drip from the meat. As a result the juices stay with the meat, enhancing flavour and succulence and, at the same time, no waste juices mean there is no need for a fat tray.

5. PAIRING UP
USP Alyn Williams and Jestic
Details Vitamix made two announcements at the show: the signing of a new distribution deal with food services equipment provider Jestic Foodservice Equipment and a new partnership with the company's first chef ambassador in the UK, Alyn Williams.

9. GLUTEN-FREE SNACKS
USP Gluten-free treats
Details The new extended range of Minis now stocked by Virgin, BMI and Thomas Cook are made to the same specification as the Honeybun regular cake slices, but are half the size. The gluten-free specialist wraps all of its products in biodegradable film and the cakeboards are printed with vegetable-based inks.

10. LOCKED SECURELY
USP Locking tabs
Details London Bio Packaging presented its new Greenline range for salad boxes and sandwich packs. The fully PLA-lined packs have a locking tab to keep the packs sealed without the need for a label. The packs are made from sustainable forestry resources and are 100% compostable.

11. APPRENTICESHIPS
During the show the National Apprenticeship Service announced moves to help more employers recruit apprentices.
The government confirmed an extension of the Apprenticeship Grant for employers of 16-24 year olds to March 2014 and the £1,500 grant is available to help businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees take on an apprentice.
Business secretary Vince Cable said: "I know it can be a big decision for busy, small companies to take on an apprentice.
"Employers may be concerned about the time recruitment and training will take, and anxious about how it will work. So the £1,500 grant is a token to acknowledge this and thank employers. I hope many more people will take us up on our cash incentive to grow their business, and train up the workforce of the future."
