Jason Atherton opens in the New York Edition
Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton has crossed the Atlantic to open his first restaurant in the US and his 15th in total at the New York Edition hotel.
The success of Berners Tavern directly led to Atherton's involvement in the New York Edition, where he is overseeing an 83-seat restaurant on the second floor, overlooking Madison Square Park in the NoMad district of the city.
With Schrager responsible for the overall look of the hotel, the design has been created by the Rockwell Group and ISC Design Studio. The restaurant is spread across three dining rooms, a parlour with a billiard table and a library serving cocktails, after dinner drinks and dessert.
The dining rooms and billiard room - all featuring a series of black and white photographs - are themed under the headings Great American Artist, New York Street Scenes, American Icons and Great American Musicians.
Original herringbone oak floors, mahogany panelling on the walls and a Venetian plaster ceiling are enlivened with rose, green and blue velvet chairs and banquettes, inspired by the vibrant colours of Vermeer and other Dutch artists. A contemporary edge is provided by a large chandelier featuring black iron arms that support a 7ft diameter plaster ring - from designer Eric Schmitt - in each of the three dining areas.
Atherton currently has six restaurants in London, three of which have a Michelin star - Pollen Street Social, Social Eating House and City Social.
He also operates three restaurants each in Hong Kong and Singapore and two in Shanghai. Future London openings include Social Wine & Tapas next month, Sosharu in December and an Italian venture next year in Victoria. Overseas, he will be launching restaurants in Sydney and Dubai.
