Deliveroo commits to improving in-app allergen information

Deliveroo has committed to overhauling its app to improve allergen information.

The delivery company has said a new menu display system will be rolled out in December, providing a dish-by-dish breakdown showing which of the 14 EU allergens each individual food item contains.

Brands including Tortilla, Tommi's Burger Joint, Mildreds and Chipotle are among the 30 brands signed up for the launch with YO! Sushi, PizzaExpress, Pho and Byron committed to join the scheme in January.

All 10,000 restaurants using the platform will have the opportunity to partake in the scheme as it is rolled out into 2019.

As well as increasing in-app information, the new system will allow consumers to interact directly with restaurants and flag up specific allergen requirements.

As well as introducing a new system in December, Deliveroo has made immediate adaptations to ensure existing allergy warnings are more prominent.

The announcement comes after environment secretary Michael Gove said he will pursue a change in allergen labelling rules after meeting with the parents of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, the teenager who died after suffering an allergic reaction to a Pret A Manger baguette.

Dan Warne, managing director of Deliveroo UK and Ireland said: "This is great news for consumers who want more information about the food they are ordering online. Deliveroo believes that people should have an amazing delivery experience, and that must include making informed choices. Overhauling our menus is not a simple task, but customers with allergies need this extra transparency before they order which is why we are working with our restaurant partners to make it happen."
